
Veterinary Internship
At Healing Souls Sanctuary, we aim to empower our interns to grow in alignment with their interests and work towards their long-term career goals. Interns will have the opportunity to shadow our veterinary staff and assist with the daily operations of the sanctuary. To apply for the veterinary internship, applicants must be studying or have graduated from a veterinary-related field and possess clinical experience.
Veterinary Internship Prerequisites:

At least 18 years old

Can commit to a minimum of one month

Currently studying or graduated in a veterinary-related field

Has clinical experience, preferably in a rehabilitation center

Can provide at least two educational or professional references

Fluent in English and/or Spanish

Successfully completes a Zoom interview
Common Experiences During the Veterinary Internship
Interns can expect a variety of duties and experiences based on the duration of their internship. Those committing to one month will engage in the following activities:

Feeding neonate and juvenile animals

Assisting and observing animal emergencies and triage
-
Observing surgeries and learning about surgical procedures

Observing and learning about necropsies (interns may be qualified to perform necropsies on a case-by-case basis)

Loading syringes and administering medications to animals at the sanctuary

Assisting with animal husbandry, including cleaning, feeding, and enrichment
-
Preparing diets and nutritional needs for various species
-
Maintaining accurate record keeping

Collecting browse and leaves for animal diets

Participating in weekly educational lectures and workshops
Interns who can stay longer than one month will experience additional activities, including:

Completing independent necropsies, depending on the animals received

Assisting and observing animal surgeries

Honing critical care skills such as bandaging techniques, inserting catheters for IVs, and fluid therapy

Practicing and learning different suturing techniques
-
Gaining experience in wild animal medicine and pharmacology

Assisting with physiotherapy for recovering animals
